Charity Showcase - Day 2 Barnsley Hospice

It's only a few days to go until the Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber Awards, where we'll be announcing the 2015 Charity of the Year.

The awards ceremony is being held on Friday 23rd October, and we'll be presenting the winning South Yorkshire charity with their award and a £3000 donation. In the run up to the ceremony we're showcasing the great work of the shortlisted charities.

It's day two of our 2015 charity showcase, and today we're looking at the work of Barnsley Hospice.

Barnsley Hospice is celebrating its 30th year, having been founded in 1985, and the twentieth anniversery of when the doors first opened to their Day Hospice. In that time the charity have helped the lives of thousands of people across the area, by providing care for patients with life-limiting illnesses.

The hospice specialises in using palliative care (including pain and symptom management, emotional support and end-of-life care) to give the best possible quality of life to those with serious illnesses. As well as this the specialist staff give invaluable support to the affected families, throughout the illness and in times of bereavement. The charity cares for people with a wide range of life-limiting illnesses, not only at the hospice itself but across the community and in people's homes too.

Barnsley Hospice go beyond all this though. The charity works alongside other care providers such as Barnsley Hospital, Macmillian nurses, GPs, dieticians, Social Services and physiotherapists. This means that their patients get a completely comprehensive care service, creating a seamless transition all the way from home, to hospital, to hospice. The staff at the hospice also offer an out-of-hours advice service.

These are just some of the reasons why we've shortlisted Barnsley Hospice for the award. It costs more than £9000 each day to run the hospice, and whilst they do get annual support from the NHS, they have to raise an extra £2 million each year to stay open and to provide their much-needed care to the communities around Barnsley.

Head over to their website to find out more, or follow them on Twitter for the latest updates.

Other charities shortlisted for our Charity of the Year award are Action Housing, Rotherham and Barnsley Mind, Rotherham Hospice and Safe@Last.
