Charity Showcase - Day 3 Rotherham & Barnsley Mind
There's only 3 days left until we announce the Charity of the Year at the Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber Awards.
On Friday 23rd October we'll be revealing which of our shortlisted South Yorkshire charities has won the Charity of the Year award, along with their £3000 donation. To celebrate some of the fantastic work done across the county we've decided to showcase each of the shortlisted charities.
It's the third day of our 2015 charity showcase, and the turn of Rotherham and Barnsley Mind.
Founded in 1977, Rotherham & Barnsley Mind has been helping local communities for nearly 40 years. Their vision is simple; better mental health around Rotherham and Barnsley. And how do they do this? By providing high quality support in a variety of settings, to promote good mental health and emotional well-being.
The charity helps to support everybody with a mental health illness, through their adult groups, men's groups, women's groups, work clubs and counselling services. They also work in and with 28 schools in the area, to help children, young people and families affected by mental health problems.
Through their work with schools, Rotherham & Barnsley Mind can offer their specialist help in a 'safe, therapeutic and confidential enviornment'. The charity have also launched a new initiative with their Children, Young People & Families Service to offer mental health training courses, specifically designed to raise awareness of mental health issues; an issue that's made the headlines across Britain in recent months. These professional development events also help the supporting staff to network with other professionals, share tips and consider up-to-date research in the field of mental health; all with the view of providing better and better care for those who need it.
Rotherham and Barnsley Mind are leading their field by making more and more people aware of mental health issues. One of the ways they're doing this is through 'Mind Your Own Business', a service to help businesses support their employees' mental health. This includes free mental health at work training, specialist training courses for managers, directors and employees, bespoke mental health HR support and counselling sessions.
It's clear from their leading work in this field as to why we shortlisted this charity. Mental health issues affect more than 1 in 4 people in the UK, but a lot of us aren't aware of what this means and how to help those who suffer from these problems.
Rotherham and Barnsley Mind is affiliated with Mind, the national mental health charity.
Other charities shortlisted for our Charity of the Year award are Action Housing, Barnsley Hospice, Rotherham Hospice and Safe@Last.
