Charity Showcase - Day 4 Rotherham Hospice
There's 2 days to go until the Barnsley and Rotherham Awards ceremony, where we'll be announcing the winner of our Charity of the Year award.
This Friday (23rd October) we'll be revealing which of the South Yorkshire charities we shortlisted has won our £3000 donation, as well as this annual award. We received lots of great awards submissions from charities of all shapes and sizes. So to celebrate them we've decided to showcase their brilliant work, each day in the run up to the presentation night.
Today's the penultimate day of our 2015 charity showcase and we're looking at Rotherham Hospice.
Rotherham Hospice has been serving its local communities since 1996, when it first opened its doors to day patients. Since this time the hospice has gone from strength to strength, opening an inpatient unit in 1997, a complete refurbishment in 2010 and a ten-bed extension the year after, meaning that Rotherham Hospice now has 14 single en-suite rooms in its inpatient unit.
So what does the hospice do? The main purpose of Rotherham Hospice is to bring a better quality of life, not only to the patients involved but everyone and anyone connected to them, like family and friends. They do this by providing very specialist palliative care, helping and supporting patients at every stage of their illness. Not only do they provide their invaluable help in the hospice enviornment, but they offer a 'well-co-ordinated, multi-professional and ‘seamless’ service' that brings together primary, secondary and tertiary health care services with other healthcare agencies, social services and education services. By putting their patients at the very heart of their work, they offer the best care and support possible, across the local area.
They don't just value their patients highly, but their staff too. The hospice recognises that to provide the best care, they need the best possible staff. That's why it's their aim to ensure all staff who help are fully 'engaged and empowered' to provide the highest quality and safest care. These are just a few of the reasons why we shortlisted Rotherham Hospice for the Charity of the Year award. All their care is provided completely free of charge, and as such the Hospice heavily relies on donations and fundraising.
Other charities shortlisted for our Charity of the Year award are Action Housing, Barnsley Hospice, Rotherham & Barnsley Mind and Safe@Last.
