Charity Showcase - Day 5 Safe@Last
It's that day; the day of the awards. Tonight we'll be announcing the winner of the BR Chamber 2015 Charity of the Year Award.
This evening we'll be revealing which of the 5 shortlisted charities have won this great award, along with our £3000 donation. Because we received loads of great entries from charities across Barnsley, Rotherham and South Yorkshire, we've decided to showcase some of the brilliant work that's being done across the county.
Today's the final day of our 2015 charity showcase, and we're celebrating the work of Safe@Last.
Safe@Last was founded in 2000, in response to the increasing number of young people running away from home. Over the years the charity have built up their team of core staff to 25 people, along with many other volunteers, to provide all-round support to the young people who need it. Today this includes a 24 hour helpline, a missing young people's service, preventative education and family support.
The charity's main focus might be on those young people who run away from home, but they're also tackling the reasons why this happens, all to stop this happening in the first place. Safe@Last do this by combatting other issues affecting these young people, such as neglect, abuse, self-harming, violence, sexual exploitation and mental health problems.
Over the years Safe@Last has helped thousands of young people across South Yorkshire, and they're seeing great results; improving lives and providing young people with a much better quality of life. They know that what they're doing is working; many of their staff and volunteers have been given awards for their help in this field of social care, are they're regularly consulted for their expertise and knowledge.
We shortlisted Safe@Last because of these reasons, but also because the issues that they're tackling are faced by as many as 1 in 9 young people in the region. In addition, in terms of charitable work, much of what Safe@Last does is often overlooked in the national media, so we felt this was a great opportunity to highlight their invaluable contribution to the lives of young people across South Yorkshire.
Other charities shortlisted for our Charity of the Year award are Action Housing, Barnsley Hospice, Rotherham and Barnsley Mind and Rotherham Hospice.
