Christmas Sacks for Sheffield's most poorly babies

Jessops Hospital is home to one of the largest and most advanced Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) in the country.
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Jessops Hospital supports thousands of families every single year through all stages of pregnancy. This includes conception all the way through to care after birth. With over 8000 babies born at the hospital each year, Jessops helps care for around 800 critically ill and premature babies with the assistance of the Sheffield Hospitals Charity. Constant 24 hour care is required in order to help families get through the stressful period of caring for their newly born child. The number of babies requiring the Jessop wing’s specialist support is increasing as more and more children are transferred to the hospital. Unfortunately, the festive season can be a very difficult time for families struggling with ill and premature babies.
Sheffield Hospitals Charity (SHC) is the official NHS charity that helps patients being treated for almost every condition across all of the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals sites. Investing over £2 million a year in patient and family support, pioneering research, new equipment, supporting staff and improving the hospital’s infrastructure, the SHC’s funds help improve the lives of patients as well as their families. Just one of the units that the Sheffield Hospitals Charity aids is the NICU at the Jessop Wing.
We understand that Christmas is pushed aside for families struggling during the care of their unfit new-born. Helping the Sheffield Hospitals Charity is an easy decision for us to make. Last year we packed Christmas stockings with presents for families in the NICU so that they could have a Christmas; meanwhile Jessops provided the necessary support for their baby. With last year’s event being so successful, we came back again with a lot more presents!
This year we returned to Jessops Hospital bearing sacks full of gifts for the families on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit who are struggling through the Christmas period! We don’t want families to be sat beside an incubator watching their child, hoping that they will be able to spend a Christmas with them; we want to give them a Christmas. Christmas Sacks is a great way to provide these families with a Christmas and take some time to enjoy the festive period instead of worrying about the worst scenario any parent can go through.
DuoCall Staff with Family Support Nurse, Sandra Brown
We’ve provided gifts including rattles and bears and packed them into 50 sacks for the Unit. This will help the 44 beds on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit as well as 6 more on Transitional Care with presents.
Fiona Cleary, Fundraising Assistant at Sheffield Hospitals Charity said, “Having to spend Christmas in hospital with a premature or poorly baby will be an incredibly difficult time for parents. Thanks to the generous donation from DuoCall, families will now receive a Christmas sack full of gifts for their new-born. I’m sure this will bring a little smile to their faces and also a bit of festive cheer onto the Neonatal Unit.”.
We feel helping the local community is an important part of any business, and the Christmas sacks are amongst a list of things we’ve done this year, including Charity of the Year sponsorship and the 2015 Buggy Push. We’ll be working with the Sheffield Hospitals Charity again with their upcoming 2016 Buggy Push!
On 22nd May 2016 at 11am, the superhero themed Jessops Buggy Push will be commencing! Get yourself down to Rother Valley Country Park and join the other heroes to help raise money for the Jessop Wing! Free superhero capes are provided with every entry and it all goes towards an excellent cause.
