We're pleased to reveal Safe@Last as the Charity of the Year.

Our Charity Award winner is...

On Friday 23rd October we were thrilled to be at the Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber's Business Awards ceremony, and even more thrilled to be supporting the 2015 Charity of the Year Award.

The annual event, hosted this year at Barnsley's Metrodome, was presented by BBC Yorkshire Breakfast's Clare Frisby, and saw businesses across Rotherham, Barnsley and South Yorkshire being presented with awards from most promising new business to business growth.

Of course amongst the awards was our very own Charity of the Year award, recognising the fantastic work and contribution of 5 charities to the local area and communities across the region. Shortlisted for the award and our £3000 donation were:

After a long decision process we announced Barnsley Hospice and Rotherham Hospice as the highly commended charities, following which we revealed Safe@Last as the winner of the award and our £3000 donation. Safe@Last become the second ever winners of the Charity of the Year award, after the success of the Pippa Jones Little Treasure Trust in 2014.

Tracy Haycox, Director of Children and Young People’s Services said:

"We’re delighted to win the Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber Charity of the Year Award in recognition of our work with young runaways. SAFE@LAST works with children who run away from home and who are incredibly vulnerable and at risk of becoming victims of crime, being sexually exploited, missing education, abusing drugs and alcohol and becoming estranged from their families.  We’re looking forward to working with the Chamber and its members to raise awareness of the issues young runaways face and to work together to keep them safe.”

She added “We will use the prize money to purchase USB wristbands to be distributed through our Education and Prevention Project which works to educate and inform children and young people about the risks of running away and where they can turn for support. The wristbands will be branded to promote the SAFE@LAST helpline and data and links will also be loaded onto the USB with useful information for young people."

All the other shortlisted and highly commended charities received donations on the night too.

Congratulations to all those who entered, all who were shortlisted, highly commended and the winner, Safe@Last. Find out more about the charity's great work.
